Title I

Title I is a federal program which provides funds to supplement educational services in schools with higher percentages of students receiving Free or Reduced Price Lunch assistance.  The purpose of the program is to ensure that students in these schools have access to a high quality education.

District 622 has elected to serve its qualified elementary schools with Title I. Seven of our nine elementary schools receive Title I funds.

Title I Targeted Assistance Programs
Schools in targeted assistance programs have rates of studenst receiving Free or Reduced Price Lunch greater than they district's rate, but less than 40%.  Schools with greater than 40% that elect not to operate as school-wide Title I programs are also considered Targeted Assistance schools.    Targeted Assistance schools provide additional instruction and interventions for students most at risk of not meeting state standards in math and reading.   This instruction may take place during the school day, before school, or afterschool.

Carver Elementary
Castle Elementary
Cowern Elementary

Title I School-Wide Programs
Schools with Free-Reduced Price Lunch rates greater than 40% may apply to operate as school-wide programs (SWP).  SWP schools design a school reform plan aimed at improving overall education, while still focusing on students at risk of not meeting standards.   SWP status allows schools more flexibility in using Title I funds.  For example, SWP staff funded by Title I dollars can work with any student in the school, where in a targeted assistance program, they are only allowed to work with students identified as at risk.

Non-Public Schools and Title I
Non-public schools in District 622's boundaries are also eligible for Title I services from the district.  Students in five non-public schools currently receive services from a District 622 Title I teacher.
